Practice Management

Memphis-based Campbell Clinic began new pain management studies to reduce the number of opioids prescribed to patients, the Memphis Business Journal reports.

Here are five insights:

1. Currently, the orthopedic group is researching cryo-nucleolyis. This technique temporarily freezes nerves.

2. Orthopedic surgeons are looking to see the effects of cryo-nucleolyis on patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery.

3. Campbell Clinic is also researching other pain management treatments for patients who undergo elective shoulder rotator cuff surgery.

4. For the past five years, Campbell Clinic surgeons have been conducting research projects to reduce the number of opioid prescriptions.

5. Orthopedic surgeons account for roughly 7.7 percent of opioid prescriptions, Tyler Brolin, MD, noted. He is among the surgeons at Campbell Clinic on the forefront of curbing the opioid epidemic.
