5 things to know about neurosurgeon Dr. Randall Porter's company Medical Memory

Practice Management

In 2015, Randall W. Porter, MD, of Phoenix-based Barrow Neurosurgical Associates, founded Medical Memory, a company offering a cloud-based video patient engagement solution.

Here are five things to know about the company.

1. The idea of Medical Memory came about after Dr. Porter's dad, who lived in Chicago, received a cancer diagnosis. Dr. Porter faced the challenges of managing his father's medical condition from a different state. The experience drove Dr. Porter to change patient communication within his own practice, and eventually gave life to Medical Memory.

2. Medical Memory is designed to boost patient engagement, decrease malpractice exposure and enhance financial performance.

3. The platform encompasses four products:
Record: Providers can video record clinical consultations, rehabilitation and discharge appointments. Patients and providers receive copies of the videos.
Discharge: Providers can send recorded discharge instructions to boost patient compliance, cut readmissions and decrease follow-up phone calls.
Message: Providers are able to send one-way video messages to patients. These messages may include pre- or postoperative care instructions, family updates or cases reviews.
Inform: Providers can build a customized library of stock videos to share with patients, often relating to informed consent and surgery logistics.

4. Medical Memory's main customer base includes patients undergoing neurosurgery, and orthopedic surgery or receiving cardiac, ear, nose and throat or oncology treatment.

5. The company is releasing its patient app, which permits patients to record video during physician appointments, without using any memory on their phones. Patients may stream these videos at any time.
