Mercy Medical Center reports 6% readmission rate for spinal fusion – lowest in Maryland

A 2016 CMS analysis conducted by Dexur showed Baltimore-based Mercy Medical Center was the highest discharging hospital with the lowest 30-day readmission rate for DRG-460, spinal fusion except cervical without major complications or comorbidity, procedures.

While there are 19 diagnosis related DRGs included under spine procedures, researchers focused on DRG-460 due to its high discharge and readmission rates.

 

Here’s what you need to know:

 

1. Mercy Medical Center experienced a 6.08 percent 30-day readmission rate for DRG-460.

 

2. In 2016, Mercy Medical Center was the 28th highest volume hospital for all Medicare inpatient discharges in the state.

 

3. Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md., ranked second in the state with a 14.66 percent 30-day readmission rate.

 

4. Bel Air, Md.-based Upper Chesapeake Medical Center experienced a 15.28 percent 30-day readmission rate, followed by University of Maryland Medical Center with 19.05 percent.

 

5. Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Md., was the fifth ranked hospital in the state with a 24.44 percent readmission rate.
