Comparing time off – how many vacation weeks do physicians take?

Practice Management

Medscape published its “2018 Physician Lifestyle & Happiness Report” which surveyed physicians on a variety of lifestyle factors including vacation time.

Medscape asked 15,543 physicians to report the number of vacation weeks they take each year from less than one to more than six.

Here are five insights:

1. Almost half, 49 percent, of physicians take three to four weeks of vacation time each year.

2. A third of respondents, 33 percent, said they take less than three weeks of vacation while 18 percent reported to take five or more weeks.

3. Fifty-five percent of employed and 37 percent of self-employed physicians taking three to four weeks of vacation.

4. Twelve percent of self-employed physicians take more than six weeks of vacation, compared to 4 percent of employed physicians.

5. Self-employed physicians (9 percent) also take less than one week of vacation time as more often than employed physicians (4 percent).
