Medscape interviewed 4,000-plus physicians in 25-plus specialties about malpractice lawsuit experiences.
Thirteen percent of physicians reported they were the only person named in a malpractice lawsuit; 48 percent said they were named along with other parties; and 45 percent noted they have never been named in a malpractice lawsuit.
The following represent the top 10 specialties for lawsuits:
• Surgery — 85 percent
• OB/GYN and women's health — 85 percent
• Otolaryngology — 78 percent
• Urology — 77 percent
• Orthopedics — 76 percent
• Plastic surgery/aesthetic medicine — 73 percent
• Radiology — 70 percent
• Emergency medicine — 65 percent
• Gastroenterology — 62 percent
• Anesthesiology — 61 percent
