WebMD collaborated with Medscape to develop the STAT-produced report, "Patient Prejudice: When Credentials Aren't Enough."
The report included survey responses from 934 consumers and 822 physicians regarding bias.
Physicians reported the types of bias they have experienced in their careers, with 59 percent noting patients have made offensive remarks about their personal characteristics.
Here are the most commonly reported types of bias, based on the survey:
1. Age — 28 percent
2. Ethnicity/national origin — 22 percent
3. Gender — 20 percent
4. Race — 19 percent
5. Religion — 12 percent
6. Weight — 12 percent
7. Political views — 11 percent
8. Accent — 10 percent
9. Medication education outside U.S. — 6 percent
10. Sexual orientation — 4 percent
