UCSF to save $262k per year with Johnson & Johnson's CareAdvantage for total joint replacements: 5 key notes

Johnson & Johnson reported on a study examining surgical instrument tray setup time and other endpoints for total knee and hip procedures using the company's CareAdvantage approach.

Study authors gathered data from the University of California San Francisco, which implemented CareAdvantage after already performing above benchmark for OR procedure setup. Study authors found:

 

1. Using CareAdvantage improved instrument tray setup time by three minutes for total hip replacements and six minutes for total knee replacements. The hospital reported a 57 percent reduction in the total number of instruments per tray and a 29 percent decrease in the number of instruments used across all procedures.

 

2. UCSF OR teams reported a 46 percent decrease in the average number of open trays after implementing CareAdvantage.

 

3. UCSF's annual cost savings generated after implementing CareAdvantage is estimated at $262,000.

 

4. CareAdvantage Perioperative Efficiency capability's tailored approach helps reduce operational costs and variation in clinical processes by streamlining Johnson & Johnson medical devices through the surgical services and sterile processing departments. J&J's Voices for Value Insights Series survey shows around 64 percent of hospital executives and 56 percent of clinicians feel perioperative efficiency is a priority for their health system.
