7 specialists most likely to live below their means — 51% of orthopedists say they do

Practice Management

According to the Medscape "Physician Wealth and Debt Report 2017," most physicians don't live above their means, and more than half of orthopedists say they live below their means.

At the same time, orthopedists reported the highest salaries last year. Here are the top seven specialties most likely to live below their means:

1. Orthopedists: 51 percent
2. Otolaryngologists: 50 percent
3. Ophthalmologists: 48 percent
4. Radiologists: 47 percent
5. Anesthesiologists: 47 percent
6. Dermatologists: 47 percent
7. Pathologists: 47 percent

Most of the physicians reported living at their means, but 10 percent of infectious disease physicians said they live above their means — the highest percentage of any specialty.
