AMA ready to work with Trump administration's new opioids commission: 4 highlights

The American Medical Association praised the Trump administration's announcement of an opioids commission.

Here are four highlights:

 

1. The AMA reported it is anticipating working with the new commission to establish policies designed to curb the opioid epidemic.

 

2. Patrice A. Harris, MD, AMA board chair, said the society is ready to provide assistance and expertise in the following areas:

 

• Public health approaches
• Best practices
• Clinical tools
• Medication-assisted treatment
• Obstacles to treatment

 

3. The society has already issued recommendations as well as increased awareness among physicians through its Task Force to Reduce Opioid Abuse.

 

4. The AMA strives to change the dialogue around opioids, treating substance abuse as a medical illness and ridding it of the stigma.
