Researchers at New York City-based Mount Sinai Beth Israel utilized musical therapy to decrease spine surgery patients' pain and came away impressed by the results.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Patients were provided with 30-minute music therapy sessions within 72 hours after surgery in addition to standard rehabilitation care.

2. Researchers noted patients' visual analog scale pain ratings before and after music therapy.

3. On average, control group participants' VAS pain levels increased from a 5.20 pre-surgery score to a post surgery score of 5.87.

4. The experimental group participants' VAS pain levels decreased from an average 6.20 score before surgery to a post-surgery score of 5.09.

5. Joanne Loewy, DA, of New York City-based The Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine and co-author of the study said, "The degree of change in the music group is notable for having been achieved by non-pharmacologic means with little chance of adverse effects."
