AMA rejects AHCA: 5 things to know

Practice Management

The American Medical Association expressed disappointment in the American Health Care Act, Congress' ACA replacement bill.

Here are five things to know:

1. In detailing a vision for healthcare reform in January, the AMA stressed the need to protect patients and prevent situations where insured individuals would become uninsured.

2. AMA president Andrew W. Gurman, MD, believes the current replacement bill could strip up to 10 million Americans of their health coverage.

3. S&P Global Ratings reports between 2 million and 4 million Americans could lose the insurance they purchased under the ACA and between 4 million and 6 million may lose Medicaid coverage under AHCA guidelines.

4. In a letter sent to leaders of the relevant House committees, AMA CEO and vice president James L. Madara, MD, wrote, "We encourage you to ensure that low and moderate income Americans will be able to secure affordable and adequate coverage and that Medicaid, CHIP, and other safety net programs are maintained and adequately funded."

5. The American Hospital Association also opposes the AHCA.
