Dr. Nikhil Verma offers Canadians alternative to long wait times with fixed price knee, shoulder surgeries

Practice Management

Orthopedic surgeon Nikhil Verma, MD, and his colleagues at Chicago's Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush are offering international patients a fixed price for knee and shoulder surgery.

Here's what you should know.

1. Dr. Verma said the decision is in response to long wait times in Canada over elective procedures.

2. A 2015 survey from the Fraser Institute said Canadians are waiting 23.4 weeks longer than the recommended wait time for a procedure. A 2013 survey in the New York Times reported the average wait time in the U.S. for an orthopedic procedure is 9.8 days.

3. The program includes: knee arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament repair, shoulder arthroscopy, shoulder replacement and rotator cuff repair.

Rush offers package pricing for hip arthroscopy, spine, hand and lower extremity joint replacement surgeries. Dr. Verma said the bundles are "for patients who want a choice in healthcare and want to see one of our physicians based on quality and experience."

4. The pricing is non-negotiable and payment must be made in full at the time of the procedure. The program may require patients to see outside services including: MRIs or X-rays, postoperative rehabilitation, home health services, physical therapy, durable medical equipment and/or postoperative medication.

5. The program expects to add more procedures in the future.
