Hospital employment of physicians is increasing, but the level of physician engagement can make a big difference, according to the Gallup Physician Engagement Survey.

Here are eight key points from the survey:

1. Fully engaged physicians are likely to give a hospital 3 percent more outpatient referrals and 51 percent more inpatient referrals.

2. Engaged physicians are more productive without necessarily working longer hours. The fully engaged physicians reported 26 percent higher productivity than less engaged counterparts.

3. The engaged physicians were able to generate $460,000 in patient revenue per year on average due to their higher productivity.

4. The factors that often drive physician engagement include:

• Leadership and decision making related to clinical and administrative policy
• Reaction to changes in healthcare related to economic, technological and regulatory changes
• The level of control physicians feel like they have over their schedule
• Resources and staffing support
• Personal health and well-being to support a positive work/life balance

5. The engaged workers are often more loyal to the organization, trust the organization, cooperate with others, work through challenges and speak about problems to offer constructive suggestions.
