Male RNs earned $83k in 2015, compared to female RNs' $78k — 11 survey highlights

The Medscape RN/LPN Salary Report 2016 included responses from 10,026 nurses who are either registered nurses, licensed practical nurses or advanced practice registered nurses.

Here are 11 survey highlights:

 

1. RNs work in the following practice settings:

 

  • Hospital/inpatient care: 41 percent 
  • Hospital-based outpatient: 15 percent 
  • Academic: 4 percent 
  • Home health: 3 percent 
  • Military/government: 2 percent

 

2. LPNs work in the following practice settings:

 

  • Skilled nursing facility: 22 percent
  • Non-hospital-based medical office/urgent care: 18 percent
  • Hospital-based outpatient: 15 percent 
  • Hospital/inpatient care: 9 percent 
  • Home health: 3 percent

 

3. In 2015, RNs earned an average full-time salary of $78,000, down from $79,000 in 2014.

 

4. LPNs made average full-time earnings of $43,000 in 2015, down from $46,000 in 2014.

 

5. Fifty-three percent of RNs are paid at an hourly rate, while 47 percent are salaried.

 

6. While 83 percent of LPNs are paid by the hour, 17 percent receive salaries.

 

7. Both full-time and part-time/per-diem RNs received an hourly rate of $37.

 

8. Full-time LPNs received hourly wages of $21, compared to part-time/per-diem LPNs receiving hourly wages of $23.

 

9. Of those surveyed, 8 percent of RNs and 8 percent of LPNs are men.

 

10. Male RNs noted average full-time earnings of $83,000, compared to $78,000 for female RNs.

 

11. Male LPNs received earnings of 47,000 compared to female LPNs receiving $43,000.
