OSS Orthopaedic Hospital moving forward with price transparency initiative — 5 things to know

Practice Management

York, Pa.-based OSS Orthopaedic Hospital is now putting its quality assessments and prices for services on its website, according to York Dispatch.

Here are five things to know:

1. Various independent providers are considering partaking in a collaboration that would bring free-market healthcare to York residents. OSS and other providers are following suit from an Oklahoma City surgery center that started posting prices for its procedures nearly seven years ago.

2. Like OSS Health, practices including Gastro Associates of York and Leader Surgical Associates of York have also expressed interest in promoting price transparency.

3. In the free market healthcare plan, if an employee required surgery, the employer would give that employee an incentive to select the high-quality and less expensive option.

4. If working alone, OSS Health's plan would cover nearly 40 percent of the money employers usually spend on healthcare. In tangent with Leader Surgical, Gastro Associates and other groups, the collaboration could cover between 30 percent and 40 percent of these services.

5. Rebecca Bruce, a senior practice administrator at Leader Surgical, said the practice is currently in the exploratory phases of the free market program. Nick Pandelidis, MD, a partner at OSS Health, believes the free market will take hold soon, telling York Dispatch, "We are confident that come Jan. 1, (2017,) this will completely change healthcare in this area."
