Can undocumented immigrants save the ACA? 5 takeaways

Practice Management

Twenty-four million people in the United States lack health coverage, according to a Commonwealth Fund report. And of those 24 million, 40 percent are Latino.

In order to preserve the Affordable Care Act, various health policy experts recommend the administration zone in on Latinos, whether they are citizens or undocumented, according to WFPL.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Undocumented immigrants aren't allowed to enroll in Medicaid or purchase health coverage through exchanges.

2. With United Healthcare and Aetna tapping out of state exchanges in 2017, ACA's future is becoming shaky.

3. To boost the program, some health policy experts believe Latinos may be the answer, as they account for about half of the uninsured young adults in the United States.

4. By allowing undocumented immigrants to enroll in ACA exchanges, the number of overall enrollees would increase.

5. Some analysts argue granting eligibility to undocumented immigrants would allow them to opt into coverage before they get sick, which would cut down long-term health system costs.
