Employed vs. self-employed: Which orthopedists spend the most hours per week on administrative work?

It has been well-documented that paperwork and administrative tasks for physicians have been increasing steadily over the last few years.

Here 14 statistics on the number of hours per week orthopedic surgeons spend on administrative work, according to Medscape Orthopedist Compensation Report 2016:

 

Employed physicians:

 

•    0 hours — 1 percent
•    One to four hours — 11 percent
•    Five to nine hours — 22 percent
•    10 to 14 hours — 36 percent
•    15 to 19 hours — 13 percent
•    20 to 24 hours — 11 percent
•    25 hours or more — 7 percent

 

Self-employed physicians:

 

•    0 hours — 0 percent
•    One to four hours — 14 percent
•    Five to nine hours — 30 percent
•    10 to 14 hours — 31 percent
•    15 to 19 hours — 11 percent
•    20 to 24 hours — 4 percent
•    25 hours or more — 9 percent
