8 things to know about hospital EMRs: Are they adequate?

Practice Management

According to a Healthcare Intelligence Network report, there are hospitals questioning whether the electronic health records they have in place will support their needs in the future.

Here are eight key statistics:

1. Thirty-two percent of hospitals are re-evaluating their existing EHR vendor's services and products.

2. Nineteen percent of the hospitals report a re-evaluating the existing EHR system will likely lead to a replacement.

3. Almost all — 92 percent — of the hospitals say population health competencies and data connectivity with other providers are key criteria that put EHR vendors on their short list.

4. There are 10 hospital EHR vendors that accounted for 90 percent of the market at the end of 2013.

5. Seventy-five percent of meaningful use stage 2 physician attestations were made using cloud-based EHRs.

6. Nearly all — 90 percent — of healthcare organizations either exposed or had patient data stolen in 2012 and 2013.

7. Less than 14 percent of physicians report being able to electronically transmit health information outside their own organization.

8. Ten percent to 15 percent of eligible attesting hospitals to meaningful use can expect to be audited by CMS. By 2015, there were 44,000 Meaningful Use hardship exemption requests sent to CMS.
