Newport Beach, Calif.-based DISC Surgery Center is preparing for its first Florida ASC with spine surgeon Jason Cuellar, MD, PhD.
Dr. Cuellar’s involvement has been a couple years in the making through his connections with Michael Bailey, vice president of development at DISC’s parent company, he told Becker’s.
“There’s been a huge influx of people moving to South Florida in the last five years, and these people need medical and orthopedic care,” Dr. Cuellar said. “South Florida is not only a host to a growing population, but Miami and Palm Beach are popular destination sites for the world. By providing the very highest level of spine surgery care, particularly in the field of motion preservation, we’ll be able to attract more and more patients, not just locally, but those willing to travel to us in order to obtain the best care.”
Florida has been an emerging hotspot for orthopedic care with groups including Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute and New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery opening facilities in the state.
Dr. Cuellar, who has lived in Florida since 2019, said he hopes to differentiate DISC with his own expertise in spine surgery and offering options to fill in care gaps in the state.
“I’ve already differentiated myself as an expert in the use of artificial disc replacement and the treatment of spinal disorders without fusion,” he said. “I continued to grow that practice and my referral base across Florida and the entire east coast, and we just opened a new office in Palm Beach. I’m able to provide an unparalleled concierge-style practice which every patient deserves. I’m pretty confident that DISC’s new ASC will be the most efficient and safest center to have spine or total joint replacement surgery in the outpatient setting.”
The new ASC, which is expected to open in the fourth quarter, will begin with 10 to 15 spine and orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Cuellar said.
