Here are five points:
1. Patients who received four weekly text messages over a period of six months experienced substantial reductions in LDL cholesterol and blood pressure and increases in physical activity and smoking cessation, according to a study of 710 patients with coronary heart disease. Messages included advice, motivation reminders and support to alter lifestyle behaviors.
2. In the study, 91 percent of participants reported the text message program was a valuable tool and 97 percent stated it was easy to understand.
3. On the other hand, patients can successfully monitor different health markers via special devices that pair with smartphone apps through Bluetooth technology.
4. A different study found although many patients support the healthcare industry’s adoption of virtual technology, there is still significant room for improvement. Many medical professionals have voiced concern over maintaining HIPAA compliance.
5. While technology is a valuable tool, some experts argue it cannot replace immediate care in an emergency setting. Patients may need further education that any potentially life threatening condition should receive prompt, real-life attention from a trained physician.
