Telemedicine program for Stephensville Elementary students — 5 observations

Morgan City-based Stephensville Elementary (La.) created a telemedicine program allowing students in remote areas to connect to health services, according to The Advocate.

Here are five observations:

 

1. St. Martin Parish School System’s will provide health telemedicine services starting November.

 

2. The telemedicine program will use Bluetooth-enabled medical equipment, software and Web camera to connect students at St. Marin Parish School to a health center at St. Martinville Senior High.

 

3. St. Martin Parish School operates three school-based health centers located in Cecilia, St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge. The centers provide health and mental health services for students and are housed on school campuses.

 

4. United Way of Acadiana provided the school with a $55,000 grant, which included $15,000 raised by Lafayette General Health employees for the telemedicine project. Additionally, Capital One donated $10,000 to the school.

 

5. The program is seeking a nurse to work 20 hours each week in an effort to reduce absenteeism and provide quality healthcare to students.
