McKesson sold its small physician practice electronic health records and practice management product lines to e-MDs, which could change the landscape for both companies, according to a HealthData Management report.

Here are five key notes:

1. The e-MDs client base grew to 55,000 physicians after bringing in 35,000 physicians that use McKesson’s small practice products.

2. The sale doesn’t reflect change in McKesson’s overall health information technology strategy, according to Senior Vice President and General Manager at the business performance services unit Scott Sanner.

3. McKesson is focused on supporting hospitals and now e-MDs will have a larger role in supporting small and mid-sized practices as well as solo practitioners.

4. The McKesson services include supporting transitions to ICD-10 and revenue cycle management.

5. e-MDs expects to migrate the new physician clients to a unified cloud platform gradually. The cloud-based system is expected to reduce costs and improve support services.

6. The terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.
