He earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency at Texas Tech University Health Science Center/William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso. His additional training includes time studying hand surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Dr. Nilsson spent time as an orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Army and served as a faculty member of the San Antonio Military Medical Center. He has received a Bronze Star for his work as part of the Iraqi invasion force.
