Q: Athens Orthopedic has added three surgeons just in 2010, with one of them a spine surgeon. What was a challenge that arose from those additions, and how are you taking on that challenge?

Denise Kesler: At our facility, space has been a big issue. With the addition of these new surgeons, it’s been difficult trying to find enough storage space for all their needs, including additional equipment and supplies. Especially because our volume has increased as a result of the new physicians, we’ve also had to be very creative in trying to accommodate our patient load. The biggest thing we did was put our facility through reconstruction to allow for more space to deal with those two issues.

Q: What process had to take place to provide an easier transition to Athens Orthopedic for new orthopedic surgeons?

DK: The one thing we did was work hard in the scheduling department to accommodate the new surgeons. We want to make sure everyone has block time in place. We also meet with all our new physicians prior to their first day to find out their specific needs for the specialty and have everything in place once they join the practice. We make sure they have all the equipment they need as soon as they start, and all that is prepared months prior to them coming in.
