The plurality of physicians with an active license were in the South Atlantic region in the United States in 2010, according to “A Census of Actively Licensed Physicians in the United States, 2010” published in the Journal of Medical Regulation.

The report provides a summary of data collected during 2010 from each of the state medical and osteopathic boards in the United States and the District of Columbia by the Federation of State Medical Boards. The following data was taken from the 2010 FSMB Census of Licensed Physicians.

 

The distribution of physicians with an active license according to U.S. region in 2010 was:

 

•    South Atlantic — 18 percent
•    Pacific — 17 percent
•    Middle Atlantic — 16 percent
•    East North Central — 15 percent
•    West South Central — 9 percent
•    West North Central — 7 percent
•    New England — 7 percent
•    Mountain — 6 percent
•    East South Central — 5 percent
