AAOS Releases Position Statement on Imaging Appropriate Use Criteria

The American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons Board of Directors has adopted a new statement on the appropriate use criteria for orthopedic imaging services, according to an AAOS Now report.

As government and regulatory bodies again examine in-office ancillary services, there has been a growing perception of over-utilization. The AAOS statement seeks to provide legislators with an outline of how to develop guidelines that:

 

•    Uses qualified physician participation
•    Embeds clinical decision support tools
•    Focuses on advanced diagnostic imaging services
•    Provides confidential physician feedback and quality improvement strategies
•    Measures utilization and appropriateness
•    Identifies outliers
•    Promotes participation in value-based care
