91% of Physicians Report Patients Didn’t Know About Malpractice Lawsuit

An overwhelming majority of physicians reported that patients either did not know about their medical malpractice lawsuit or did not mention it if they did know, according to Medscape’s Malpractice Report, released in 2013.

Researchers polled 3,480 U.S. physicians from across 25 specialty areas for the survey.

When asked about patient reactions to their lawsuits, respondents reported the following:

•    They didn’t know or didn’t mention anything about it — 91 percent
•    They were supportive overall — 9 percent
•    Some patients left the practice — 1 percent
