Here are nine things to do to improve direct encounters with patients:

 

1. Sit down during patient encounters.
2. Develop an understanding of the patient as an individual.
3. Show empathy and respect.
4. Listen attentively and create a partnership.
5. Elicit concerns and calm fears.
6. Answer questions honestly.
7. Inform and educate patients about treatment options and the course of care.
8. Involve patients in decisions concerning their medical care.
9. Demonstrate sensitivity to patients’ cultural and ethnic diversity.
