Here are nine characteristics of active physicians in the United States in 2010, according to the 2012 Physician Specialty Data Book, prepared by the Center for Workforce Studies at the Association of American Medical Colleges:

•    Male — 69.6 percent
•    Female — 30.4 percent

 

Age
•    54 years and younger — 59.7 percent
•    55 years and older — 40.3 percent

 

Medical school type
•    MD in the U.S. — 69.1 percent
•    International medical graduate program — 24 percent
•    DO in the U.S. — 6.9 percent

 

In-state graduate medical education retention
•    Not practicing in same state where graduate medical education was completed — 52.1 percent
•    Practicing in same state where graduate medical education was completed — 47.9 percent

 

The primary data sources for this report include the American Medical Association 2011 Physician Masterfile, population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau and the AAMC/AMA National Graduate Medical Education Census.
