More self-employed orthopedic surgeons are undecided about how they will handle Medicare and Medicaid patients than employed surgeons. Here are eight statistics on whether orthopedic surgeons will continue taking patients with government payers:

 

Employed orthopedic surgeons

 

•    68 percent will continue taking new and current patients
•    5 percent will stop taking new patients
•    2 percent will stop taking current patients
•    24 percent are undecided

 

Self-employed orthopedic surgeons

 

•    43 percent will continue taking new and current patients
•    16 percent will stop taking new patients
•    4 percent will stop taking current patients
•    37 percent are undecided
