78% of Physicians Believe EHRs Improve Access to Clinical Data

Most physicians believe that electronic health records improve access to clinical data, according to the “2013 Physician Sentiment Index,” by Epocrates and athenahealth.

The report includes responses from 1,200 physicians, 30 percent of whom are primary care physicians and 76 percent of whom are specialists.

When asked how strongly they agree with each of the following statements with regard to their EHRs, respondents reported the following:

•    Improves access to clinical data — 78 percent
•    Improves bill collections — 63 percent
•    Improves compliance with clinical guidelines — 59 percent
•    Reduces medical errors — 53 percent
•    Helps integrate the clinical data with existing practice management systems — 51 percent
•    Improves efficiency — 21 percent
•    Reduces costs — 20 percent
