7 Tips for Developing Effective Checklists

The Joint Commission revealed that surgical mistakes topped all reported “sentinel events” in the first half of 2013, according to LifeWings, a team of physicians, nurses, pilots and astronauts.

LifeWings has been helping hospitals fight surgical mistakes with checklists adopted from NASA and the World Health Organization since 1999.

 

Here are seven tips for developing checklists to prevent surgical mistakes, according to LifeWings:

 

1. Ensure checklists are user-built and maintained.
2. Keep checklists short.
3. Don’t confuse your checklist with an audit tool.
4. Include speaking parts for the team on your checklist.
5. Use standardized and scripted language.
6. Design your checklist as a “Read and Verify” tool.
7. Make it is surgeon led.
