Practice Management

Bethlehem, Pa.-based St. Luke's University Health Network has unveiled a $44 million specialty hospital for same-day orthopedic surgeries in Allentown, Pa., according to a Sept. 25 report from Lehigh Valley Business.

The new hospital will treat sports-related fractures and injuries and offer same-day knee, hip, spine, hand and shoulder procedures.

The two-story, 52,000-square-foot facility will have eight operating rooms and 24 rooms for pre- and post-surgery care.

The facility will also have a VELYS robotic solution for joint replacement procedures. St. Luke's chairperson of orthopedics estimates that the center will perform 3,000 elective operations in 2024.

St. Luke's orthopedic specialists complete around 15,000 surgeries every year, witnessing a 20 percent growth in the service line between 2022 and 2023.

Around 80 nurses, technicians, therapists and other staff are being added to work at the new hospital, where an estimated 25 to 30 percent of all network-provided orthopedic operations will be performed.

The hospital expects to begin seeing patients this winter.
