5 Statistics on US Physicians by Race and Ethnicity

Seventy-five percent of all medical school graduates practicing medicine, between 1978 and 2008, were white, according to “Diversity in the Physician Workforce: Facts & Figures 2010,” released by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

The data in the report was derived from AAMC’s Minority Physician Database. The data presented only covers physicians who graduated from medical schools that grant MDs in the U.S. between 1978 and 2008.

 

Between 1978 and 2008, medical school graduates practicing medicine included:

 

•    White — 75 percent
•    Asian — 12.8 percent
•    African American — 6.3 percent
•    Hispanic or latino — 5.5 percent
•    American Indian or Alaska native — 0.5 percent.
