5 Statistics on the Long-Term Effects of Being Sued

Most physicians report that while the experience of being sued was bad, it did not affect them financially or emotionally in the long-term, according to Medscape’s Malpractice Report, released in 2013.

Researchers polled 3,480 U.S. physicians from across 25 specialty areas for the survey.

When asked about the long-term emotional and financial effects of a medical malpractice lawsuit, physicians reported the following:

•    No long-term effects — 63 percent
•    I no longer trust patients/I treat patients differently — 29 percent
•    I left the practice setting — 6 percent
•    I changed my insurer — 4 percent
•    I purchased more malpractice insurance — 2 percent
