5 Statistics on Physician Appointment Wait Times by Specialty

The average wait time for scheduling physician appointments is highest for dermatology, according to “Physician Appointment Wait Times and Medicaid and Medicare Acceptance Rates: 2014 Survey,” released by Merritt Hawkins, a national physician search and consulting firm.

The survey polled 1,399 medical offices and tracked the average time needed to schedule a doctor appointment in 15 large metropolitan areas.  

 

The average wait times for scheduling physician appointments, in accordance with specialty, are:

 

•    Dermatology — 28.8 days
•    Family Practice — 19.5 days
•    Obstetrics and Gynecology — 17.3 days
•    Cardiology — 16.8 days
•    Orthopedics — 9.9 days
