Here are five observations:

1. The grant money will create four regional hubs for data science.

2. The hubs will be run by data scientists from Columbia University in New York, Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, San Diego and UC Berkeley.

3. More than 250 organizations across the United States will contribute to the research.

4. The mission of the “big data brain trust” will be to “plan and support regional big data partnerships and activities to address regional challenges.” Each hub will work on either accessing data, automating data lifecycle or applying data science to real-word problems.

5. Each hub will also focus, in part, on healthcare. The western regional hub will work on precision medicine whereas the northwest hub will study patient and biological data.
