45% of Physicians Worked in Single Specialty Practices in 2012

A little over 45 percent of physicians worked in single specialty practices in 2012, making it the most common practice type for that year, according to a recent study released by the American Medical Association.

Data for the study was drawn from a nationally representative random sample of post-residency physicians who provided at least 20 hours of patient care per week.

 

Key findings of the study are:

 

•    In 2012, 53.2 percent of physicians were self-employed.
•    Sixty percent of physicians worked in practices wholly owned by physicians in 2012.
•    The percentage of physicians who were practice owners in 2012 decreased by 8 percent from 2007-08.
•    Eighteen percent of physicians were in solo practice, down 6 percent over five years.
