1. The study found various physician-centered initiatives focusing on mindfulness and cognitive behavior do have merit.
2. However, researchers found the greatest success was achieved when implementing organization-directed approaches, such as focus on improving the work environment and organizational culture.
3. Organizations that employed various tactics in tandem with one another, such as enhancing communication, undergoing structural changes and fostering a sense of teamwork, had the most success in lowering burnout. Researchers noted, however, that intense organization-directed interventions were “rare and have not been evaluated sufficiently.”
4. Researchers concluded the healthcare industry must support providers’ mental and physical health in addition to facilitating optimal working environments to reduce burnout.
