11 orthopedic data breaches in 2023

Becker’s reported about 11 data breaches affecting spine and orthopedic practices that happened in 2023.

1. Wausau, Wis.-based Bone & Joint Clinic was hit with a data breach in January. 

2. Knoxville-based Tennessee Orthopaedic Clinics discovered a security incident that disrupted some system operations. The unauthorized party accessed files between March 20 and March 24, according to a post on the company’s website.

3. Atlanta-based Peachtree Orthopedics determined that an unauthorized third-party gained access to its computer systems and network on April 20, according to a notice posted on the practice’s website. The practice notified law enforcement and began an investigation to determine what information was breached, according to the notice.

4. Vincera Institute, a sports medicine facility in Philadelphia, issued a notice for a ransomware attack that occurred April 29. 

5. Lancaster Orthopedic Group, based in Manheim Township, Pa., is investigating a security breach that exposed the private information of between 500 and 2,000 patients.

6. Gautier, Miss.-based Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists was hit with a data breach. The practice learned it suffered a cyberattack March 5, secured its network and launched an investigation.

7. Bradenton, Fla.-based Coastal Orthopedics was hit with a data breach that may have exposed sensitive information of current and former patients.

8. Seattle-based Proliance Surgeons suffered a cyber attack in February. Proliance alerted the attorney general of Massachusetts about the breach Nov. 21.

9. New York City-based Brooklyn Premier Orthopedics experienced a data security incident that may have affected more than 48,000 people. 

10. Oklahoma City-based SSM Health and SSM Health Bone and Joint Hospital patients may have been caught in a data breach impacting SSM’s business partner Navvis. Navvis had a data breach in July 2023, determining that there was suspicious activity in its network between July 12 and July 25. 

11. Greensboro, N.C. based Southeastern Orthopaedic Specialists experienced a data breach that exposed sensitive consumer information, according to a Jan. 2 article from an attorney from Console and Associates published by JDSupra.
