Jonathan T. Deland, MD, is the chief of the foot and ankle service at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City and a professor of surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. He has a professional interest in treating patients with foot and ankle sport injuries, bunions and tendon problems.

During his career, Dr. Deland has engaged in several research projects on foot and ankle disorders. He has earned the NIH Grant on Posterior Tibial Tendon Insufficiency, Dow Corning Award for Research from the Foot and Ankle Society and the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation Grant. His current research focuses on tibial posterior tendon dysfunction, which causes adult deformity flatfoot. One study that was underway in July 2010 examined the effectiveness of a new surgery to correct the deformity.

"Before this study, we were not sure whether you could salvage patients with flat foot and ankle deformity and correct their ankle as well as their foot deformity," Dr. Deland said in a CBS article. He is also involved in research about osteochondral and arthritic lesions of the ankle, hind foot and Achilles tendon problems.

Dr. Deland has published his research in several professional journals, including Foot and Ankle International. He has also worked with Zimmer on ankle replacement devices that require less bone to be removed.

Dr. Deland earned his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. His additional training includes a fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, a fellowship in sports medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and an A-O fellowship in trauma.
