Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Michael J. Stuart of the Mayo Clinic

Michael J. Stuart, MD, is vice chair of orthopedic surgery and co-director of the sports medicine center at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He helped establish the sports medicine program in 1990 and has a professional interest in the lower extremity biomechanics. He is also involved in forwarding unicompartmental and total knee arthroplasty, proximal tibial osteotomy and meniscus and osteochondral allograft transplantation.

Dr. Stuart is certified in administering the ImPACT concussion assessment, a test used to determine whether an athlete has fully recovered from a concussion and can return to play. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy Association of North America.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Stuart is a professor of orthopedics and regularly conducts research on sports medicine topics. His recent research includes multi-ligament knee injuries, knee ligament reconstruction, meniscus and osteochondral allograft transplantation and the epidemiology of sports injuries. He also has an interest in rehabilitation following knee ligament injury and surgery. Articles on his research have been published in several professional journals, including the Journal of Knee Surgery and The American Journal of Sports Medicine.

During his career, Dr. Stuart has served as a physician for the U.S. Men’s Olympic Team in 2010 and is a consultant for the national Hockey League Players Association. He is also the chief medical officer for U.S.A. Hockey and a member of the medical committee of the International Ice Hockey Federation. He also serves as a member of the sports medicine education committee of the American Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Stuart earned his medical degree from Rush University in Chicago and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He also completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Western Ontario in Canada.
