Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Michael Weiss of Laser Spine Institute

Written by Laura Dyrda | December 14, 2010 | Print  |
Michael Weiss, DO, is the chief spine surgeon at Laser Spine Institute Scottsdale (Ariz.), where he treats his patients who have conditions such as spinal arthritis, pinched nerves, bulging discs, herniated discs and sciatic nerve compression. He has also served as the president of the Broward Orthopedic Society and is a fellow with the American Osteopathic Academy of Orthopedics.

At Laser Spine Institute, Dr. Weiss regularly performs minimally invasive spine surgery, which allows patients to recovery more quickly than open surgery. Surgeons perform the procedures through smaller incisions and dilate the muscles surrounding the spine, minimizing muscle and nerve damage.

"Spine surgery has never been one that has been amenable to smaller instrumentations and smaller incisions, but now all that's changing," Dr. Weiss said in a Becker's Orthopedic & Spine Review story about the future of spine surgery. "The bigger benefit starts to come because you do less soft tissue destruction to get to the bone."

Dr. Weiss was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association and served as an assistant clinical professor in orthopedic surgery at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Fla. Before his career as a spine surgeon, Dr. Weiss was trained as an orthopedic hand surgeon and has extensive training in adult reconstruction and total joint surgery.

Dr. Weiss earned his medical degree from Nova Southwestern University and completed additional training at Pontiac (Mich.) Osteopathic Hospital. His additional surgical training came from several sources, including the Detroit Medical Center and the Shriners Hospital in Tampa, Fla., where he trained in pediatric orthopedics.
