Michael G. Ciccotti, MD, is the director of the division of sports medicine and co-director of sports medicine research at Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. He is also the head team physician for the Philadelphia Phillies and an orthopedic consultant to the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia Eagles.

Dr. Ciccotti often treats professional, recreational and youth athletes. He is on the steering committee for the STOP Sports Injuries national campaign to educate parents, coaches, athletes and sports medicine physicians about the best methods to prevent sports-related injuries in young athletes.

"It goes beyond the pure musculoskeletal problem," Dr. Ciccotti said in an article published by Becker's Orthopedic & Spine Review. "For example, let's say you have a collegiate baseball pitcher that comes to you with a shoulder injury. You need to realize that during the time they're injured, they aren't doing their normal conditioning and their other muscles become deconditioned, so you need to help them find some facility where they can do specific strength and conditioning to help their whole body get back to sports training."

In addition to his practice, Dr. Ciccotti has published several professional articles on sports medicine topics, such as SLAP injuries and ACL reconstruction. He also gives sports medicine presentations around the world, most recently in Japan, Canada and Italy.

Dr. Ciccotti is the education chairman on the board of directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and a member of the International Sports Medicine Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Herodicus Sports Medicine Research Society and the Major League Baseball Team Physicians Association executive committees.

Dr. Ciccotti earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Dr. Ciccotti also completed his fellowship in sports medicine at Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
