Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. William G. Pujadas of Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute

William G. Pujadas, MD, is one of the founding partners of the Jacksonville (Fla.) Orthopaedic Institute, where he continues to practice from the San Marco location. He is also a member of the Baptist Center for Joint Replacement at Baptist Medical Center, where he participates in the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program.

Dr. Pujadas has an expertise in total joint replacement and reconstructive surgery. He performs anterior supine interior surgery for the hip, minimally invasive total joint surgery, decompression laminectormies, knee arthroscopy and SLAP repairs. In his work with the Bloodless Medicine and Surgery Program, Dr. Pujadas uses several principles, including erythropoietin during the preoperative period as well as coagulation techniques  during surgery.

"Benefits from bloodless surgery have been shown to include reduced infections, fewer complications and faster recovery for patients," said Dr. Pujadas in a Baptist Health newsletter. The coagulation techniques surgeons in the program use during surgery include electro-cautery, tissue link and the Peek plasma knife. He also mentioned that the Stryker ConstaVac system has worked well for salvaging blood during the early post-operative period.

Dr. Pujadas is a diplomate with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Foot and Ankle Surgeons. He is also a member of the NFL Physicians Association. Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute is the official sports medicine partner with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Dr. Pujadas earned his medical degree from the University of Autonoma de Guadalajara Medical School and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery through the University of Florida Jacksonville Hospital Education Program.
