Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Jeffrey R. McConnell of OAA Orthopaedic Specialists in Philadelphia

Jeffrey R. McConnell, MD, is a physician with Philadelphia's OAA Orthopaedic Specialists' Pennsylvania Spine and Scoliosis Institute. He is one of the leaders of "Operation Straight Spine," a charitable mission project that provides spinal treatment for the underserved population in Kolkata, India.

"Operation Straight Spine" completed its pilot project in Nov. 2006 and consisted of creating outpatient clinics, performing major spine interventions, doing ward rounds and teaching seminars for local support staff and physicians. Project physicians used bone morphogenic protein for the first time in India.

Dr. McConnell's professional interests include treating pediatric spinal deformity, motion preservation technologies for spine surgery and minimally invasive spine surgery techniques. He is trained in Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion and cervical total disc arthroplasty. He remains active in researching these areas and was the lead investigator for the SECURE-C cervical disc replacement FDA IDE clinical trial. The study compared bone graft substitutes in anterior lumbar fusion surgery.

Dr. McConnell's research has been presented internationally, including at the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar Spine. He is also affiliated with the North American Spine Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons and the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery.

Before joining OAA, Dr. McConnell spent 10 years as the co-director of the division of spine surgery at Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. He also established the Highlands Spine Institute in Bristol, Tenn., a center dedicated to the spine.

Dr. McConnell earned his medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa. He also completed fellowship in spine surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore and the Centre for Spinal Studies and Surgery at Queens Medicine Centre in Nottingham, U.K.
