Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Peter Millett of The Steadman Clinic

Peter Millett, MD, is a partner at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. His practice focuses on treating athletes with shoulder injuries, and he has expertise in treating revision shoulder surgery. He has recently been elected to serve on the National Steering Committee for the Sports Trauma and Overuse Prevention campaign, an endeavor supported by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Millett is also involved in the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's national database for baseball injuries. His research implements pitch counts and tracks the number of innings played and injuries incurred.

"In young pitchers there has been a lot of stress on the arm and shoulder," Dr. Millett said to Becker's Orthopedic & Spine Review. "First we have to track the problem and then we can understand it. Once we understand it, we can come up with strategies to potentially prevent it."

In addition to his practice, Dr. Millett works with athletes from the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL and the Olympics. He serves as a shoulder and sports medicine consultant to the country of Bermuda. This year, he received the AAOS Achievement Award for his research and contributions to orthopedic surgery.

Before he became a partner at the Steadman Clinic, Dr. Millett held a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School in Boston and was the co-director of the Harvard Shoulder Service and the Harvard Shoulder Fellowship. He also founded and directed the Musculoskeletal Proteomics Research Group at Harvard and patented a protein profile for osteoarthritis that the team discovered.

Dr. Millett earned his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical University in Hanover, N.H., and completed his residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He also completed a fellowship in sports medicine, knee and shoulder surgery at The Steadman Clinic.
