Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. Joseph C. McCarthy of Massachusetts General Hospital

Joseph C. McCarthy, MD, was recently named the president of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy. He is the vice chairman of the department of orthopedics at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston and director of the Kaplan Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery at the Newton Wellesley Hospital. His professional interests include total joint arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy.

Dr. McCarthy has also been president of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and served on the board of directors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He has received the Au Franc Award and The Frank Stinchfield Award from AAOS for the scientific presentations he gave nationally and internationally.

His research focuses on early joint disease and arthritis of the hip and knee. He has served as a consultant reviewer for several orthopedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. In addition to his articles, Dr. McCarthy has authored or co-authored three text books and 13 book chapters.

Dr. McCarthy also participates in residency training programs for orthopedic residents from Harvard and Tufts New England Medical Center in Boston.

Dr. McCarthy earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C., and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Tufts New England Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in reconstructive joint surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
