Stephen Burkhart, MD, a member of the executive committee at The San Antonio Orthopaedic Group, is a leader in shoulder surgery and recently gave the Kessel Lecture at the International Congress on Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons in Edinburgh, Scotland.  The lecture, "Expanding the Frontiers of Shoulder Surgery," examined the role of technology for treating shoulder conditions.

Dr. Burkhart has been credited as one of the first surgeons to use arthroscopic technology for treating shoulder injuries. He has authored several peer-reviewed publications and offers his expertise to publications writing about orthopedic issues, such as PRP.

"At the moment, I use PRP for massive tears and revision of large tears," said Dr. Burkhart in a Medscape Medical News report. "There is no question that the public is aware of PRP." However, he says the "jury is still out" regarding whether PRP is an effective treatment.

During his career, Dr. Burkhart has served in several leadership positions, including the president of Arthroscopy Association of North America and honorary corresponding member of several international orthopedic associations. He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

In addition to his practice, Dr. Burkhart serves as a clinical assistant professor in the department of orthopedic surgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has been nominated as one of San Antonio's best doctors by San Antonio Magazine.

Dr. Burkhart earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. He also completed a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Oregon and Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic in Eugene, Ore.
