Kevin Plancher, MD, is a physician with Plancher Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in New York City and founder of "The Orthopaedic Foundation for Active Livestyles," a non-profit foundation for encouraging healthy lifestyles and supporting the development of research and technology.

As the leader of his practice, Dr. Plancher builds his practice around the patients, which means being available on Saturdays and evenings if his patients need him. "To be a successful sports medicine doctor, you have to go the extra mile," says Dr. Plancher. "You have to care. If you don't care, the patient will realize it."

Many of his patients are active individuals who are enthusiastic about exercise and often overwork themselves. If a patient has a stress fracture from running, he recommends they take a break, even though many of these patients are eager to return to their exercise regimen. For serious athletes, he recommends cross training to avoid sports-related injuries.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Plancher is on the editorial review board of the Journal of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Journal of Medicine and Sports and the American Journal of Orthopedics. He lectures around the world on orthopedic surgery and injury management.

Dr. Plancher has been appointed the New York State Representative for the Council of Delegates to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. His practice serves as team physicians for Major League Lacrosse and the Olympic Ski & Snowboard Team.

Dr. Plancher earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and he completed his residency at Harvard University in Boston. Dr. Plancher also completed a fellowship at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colo.
